Ultimately, sociology itself has evolved as a science of society “individualizing” the free agents of modern society, who are expected to behave according to their own guidelines and held accountable for their actions. Therefore, sociology tends to approach the free and voluntary nature of human actions not as a research subject but as an assumption. The book deviates from this trend and investigates the social production of “free agents” and the close relationship between this process and the issues of social control with the integration into the system. The central proposal of the book is that in the contemporary consumer phase of modern society, “seduction” has replaced “suppression” as the method of social control for the majority of society members. However, consumer freedom is moved to the place occupied by labor in an earlier stage: systematic reproduction becomes a focus between social integration and individual action.
