Book Expert Guide to International Protocol by Gilbert Monod

Product description

The spring of 2001 marked the beginning of a lasting collaboration between Gilbert Monod de Freudville and Mark Verhoef. The former was Queen Beatrix's chief of ceremonies, while the latter worked as his assistant at the Noord-Inde Palace in The Hague. A year and a half later, Gilbert retired and was honored with a position at the royal court in the Middle East as an advisor and coach, where he gained valuable experience and insights into Middle Eastern culture. Mark followed him in 2008, and from there they began planning to co-author a book, but it took a few years before they decided to actually start writing it. In March 2014, they agreed that the book should provide an overview of protocol as it is practiced around the world, and the first edition of the book was published in English in 2016. This book provides an overview of protocol practices, including those related to diplomatic relations and business. The book is also rich in information on a wide range of countries and cultures, covering topics such as precedence, seating arrangements, the historical background of flags and where to fly them, ceremonies, invitations, dress codes, gifts, and decorations. In addition, it covers media and security issues related to VIPs, instructions for protocol officers, communicating with guests, and the host's role in strategic communication. To live up to the book's title, Gilbert and Mark asked numerous influential figures, diplomats, and intellectuals from around the world to share their experiences with protocol.
