Product description
In his novel "The Fifth Mountain," Paulo Coelho tells the story of the Prophet Elijah and his encounter with the widow in Sarepta, the small Phoenician city
then his retreat to the mountain, after defeating all his enemies. Elijah obeys the orders of his guardian angel and constantly talks to him, trying to search for a new human meaning for decision and choice. In the Lebanese city of Sarepta, destroyed by the Assyrians, Elijah loses everything: his courage, the woman he loved (the widow who helped him when he was hungry and thirsty), and his faith following the spiritual crisis that struck him. Here, Coelho adds something new to the image of the Prophet Elijah, which depicts him as strong and invincible, carrying his sword to strike down his enemies. In this novel, Elijah engages in a struggle against his own fear, a struggle between the divine and the human, between the will of God, whose manifestations the prophet is unable to understand despite his compliance, and his own choices as a human being. But the funny thing is that this text, in which Coelho based it on the Torah, took a city in Lebanon as the setting for its events, as if the writer wanted to say that history repeats itself in this country, from the beginning of time until the present day, where he paid the price for his love of tolerance, peace, and openness. In this book, Coelho raises the problems that are considered at the foundation of his literary, spiritual, and philosophical world: How can we give meaning to our lives, through struggle and hope? This is because the most powerful moments of tragedy are not divine punishment, but rather a challenge posed to humanity. Thus, Coelho gives a new meaning to punishment: what is inevitable in our lives and what we believe to be permanent is, in fact, fleeting. What is permanent is what we can extract from the lessons of the tragic inevitability.
