Book From Behind the Veil by Mehdi Khalaji

Product description

True reform of the religious establishment in Iran necessitates several changes. This reform will not be achieved unless the clergy return to the use of reason and subject their entire system and intellectual foundations to the test of current achievements and gains resulting from linguistic, historical, and social sciences. Where their arguments fail them, they must refrain from claiming authority

they must uphold the rules of science and the foundations of sound reason, and they must avoid elevating these to a lofty and exceptional status. They must prioritize the objectives of Islamic law over the literal interpretation of historical texts, and they must not reduce religion to jurisprudence. They must bear, like everyone else, individual responsibility for their thoughts and actions, and they must respect human rights and the rights of citizenship at all levels and in all spheres. They must believe that differing opinions and intellectual pluralism are the safeguards of society, its immunity, and its continuity. Just as they are humble when presenting their principles and intellectual arguments, their conduct within society must also be characterized by humility. They must behave as ordinary people living among the general public, and not as supreme authorities of God and proofs of Islam. For Muslims, unless this theoretical critique is realized and social reconstruction takes place, any meaningful and fruitful change to the Iranian religious establishment will be doomed to failure.
