Product description
It is about a cultured Russian professor who is not well-off economically, who falls in love with an aristocratic woman who pays him no attention and insults him in a way that makes the reader worry about the veracity or reality of the story. The story takes place in France. Regarding gambling, the protagonist believes deep down that he can win a lot of money if he tries to gamble in a casino. The story describes the condition of gamblers in the casino and explains the game and the psychology of the gamblers there. It portrays a realistic picture of the social relations between the poor and the rich. The novel was written in three weeks to be delivered to the publisher on time. The Gambler is not considered Dostoevsky's most important work, but it undoubtedly sheds light on important aspects of the writer's personality. Dostoevsky, just like the protagonist, was a gambler to the point of illness, losing huge sums of money at the gambling tables in Germany, France, and Switzerland. He was unable to get rid of this affliction - as he called it - for many years, until he finally stopped playing in 1871. The novel provides a serious analysis of the issue of addiction to playing, and the novelist wrote it while he was at the height of his pathological addiction.
