Product description
Those unconscious elements underlying everything we experience may seem to have very little impact on our daily lives, but they represent the hidden basis of most of our conscious thoughts. In June 1879, the American philosopher and scientist Charles Sanders Peirce was aboard a steamer on a voyage from Boston to New York when his gold watch was stolen from his cabin. Peirce reported the theft and insisted that every member of the crew line up on deck. He questioned them all, but to no avail. He then exhibited a peculiar behavior after taking a short walk: he decided to guess the identity of the thief, despite having no real evidence to support his claim. It was as if he were risking everything, knowing full well that the gamble was doomed to fail. Once he made his guess, he found himself completely convinced of the thief's identity. He later wrote about this incident, saying, "I was walking in circles, and it didn't take me a minute. As soon as I turned to them, the cloud of doubt lifted from my mind."
