Product description

A happy childhood formed around a small cafe-grocery store run by their parents, school life, a new social circle, alienation, the desire to skip grades, the need for approval, outbursts of anger, shame, abortion.

The story of denise lesur, a young girl who is stuck between two separate worlds - the uneducated working class and the educated bourgeois class - and who is trying to rebuild herself against everything her family represents with her successes in school life, is also the harbinger of the auto-sosyobiyografi article that spans years. Ernaux, who has to make peace with who she is rather than who she wants to be, and suffers from the pains of social ascendancy, is as fearless and bold as ever when telling the life of the autobiographical character denise. Ernaux's books aren't just confessions

they're a kind of personal epistemology. Reading them is an attempt to understand that incomprehensible, painful, and necessary process of 'happening'.

”the new yorker “empty lockers are more than the class system in france in the 1950s and a woman's struggle to skip class and forget her past. This novel offers an unforgettable contribution, both in terms of its subject matter and literary form, allowing those who have been culturally silenced to speak for themselves.
