CAN Olay

Product description

In the college dormitory bathroom, i had given birth to both a life and a death at the same time.

for the first time, i felt like a part of a women's chain through which generations passed.

year 1963, rouen. In france, abortion is still illegal, it is a word that cannot even be pronounced

it has no place in language.

ernaux is a twenty-three-year-old college student at the time, she finds out she's pregnant, and her world is shattered: this pregnancy will be the defining mark of her and her family's social failures.

the young woman who wants to prevent this, hides her pregnancy from her relatives and desperately starts looking for a solution. In this book, previously published under the pseudonym abortion, ernaux makes an extremely precise, uncuttable voice from a transformative “event” on an individual and political level, opening up a literary space of testimony for women excluded from history.

“universal, ancient, bold and shocking.

”financial times“ echo evocative, important work.
