Overview My original idea from Carolina Herrera was to design some fabrics. “Are you sure, because the clothes would be more fun,” said Diana (a family friend). Encouraged by her mentor, she sewed 20 dresses with the help of her dressmaker and moved—with her second husband, Reinaldo Herrera, and their daughters—to New York, although they have traveled back and forth ever since. “At first they thought I was an amateur and that I would stop in three seasons,” but she’s still here. Furthermore, Carolina Herrera (see her portrait drawn here by the brilliant David Downton) has since received countless industry honors including the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year Award and an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2012. Carolina Herrera grew up in Caracas in the 1950s and 1960s, in an old Venezuelan family that had lived in that country for 400 years. She is quoted as saying, “Everyone was very elegant. They bought their clothes in Paris or had them made in Caracas, and I wanted women to feel that they could be beautiful and elegant.” Her designs appeal to many different generations of women. As she explained, “It’s very feminine, not over-the-top.” It has to be sophisticated, easy to wear, and not too trendy. Her ultra-chic looks are almost uniforms, consisting of large skirts, tailored skirts, and masculine-style trousers.
