Product details

Product description

The Gambler by Dostoevsky.

It revolves around an educated Russian professor who is not financially well-off, falling in love with an aristocratic woman who pays him no attention and humiliates him in a way that raises the reader's concern about the story's authenticity or realism.

The events of the story take place in France.

Regarding gambling, the novel's protagonist believes deep down that he can win a lot of money if he tries to gamble in the casino.

The story describes the state of gamblers in the casino and explains the casino game and the psychology of the people gambling there.

It portrays a realistic picture of social relations between the poor and the rich.

The novel was written in three weeks to be delivered on time to the publisher.

The novel The Gambler is not considered Dostoevsky's most important work, but it undoubtedly sheds light on important aspects of the writer's own personality.

Dostoevsky was exactly like the novel's protagonist, a gambler to the point of illness, losing huge sums of money at gambling tables in Germany, France, and Switzerland.

He was unable to get rid of this affliction - as he called it - for many years, until he stopped playing permanently in 1871. The novel came with a serious analysis of the issue of gambling addiction, and the novelist wrote it while he was in the midst of his pathological addiction.
