Alfred Dunhill is a British design house specializing in menswear, luxury goods, and accessories. The business began when Alfred Dunhill, then only 21 years old, took over his father's saddling business in 1893. Automobiles were an exciting new product of technology at the time, and Dunhill converted the saddling shop into a store selling automotive accessories. Among the company's early offerings were non-standard (for the time) equipment such as horns, lamps, and dashboard clocks. Dunhill also manufactured leather protective covers, goggles, and other accessories for drivers. In 1907, another business shift occurred when Dunhill opened a tobacco shop, followed in 1910 by his own pipe factory. The company's pipes are distinguished by the "white spot" for which the brand is famous. Tobacco proved more successful for the company and allowed expansion with stores in Paris and New York. Lighters were a staple of Dunhill products. Dunhill was the first company to develop a lighter that could be operated with one hand. The company launched its distinctive Rolagas Butan lighter in the 1950s. A special Gunmetal edition of this lighter was produced by Dunhill for use in the James Bond film, "Dr. No. Dunhill also began manufacturing its own brand of cigarettes in 1963. The Dunhill shopping experience is designed to delight male luxury consumers from start to finish. The retail stores, known as "Homes," allow shoppers to purchase luxury clothing, accessories, and fine chrome, followed by a haircut at the on-site barbershop, and a spa treatment to pass the time while waiting for the next movie at the cinema. Dunhill revitalized its brand in 2005, introducing its luxury products to a new generation of customers and reaffirming the importance of menswear to the brand by appointing its first-ever creative director, Kim Jones. Dunhill fragrances, like other brand products, are designed for the male luxury consumer. The company has produced one women's fragrance to date, Desire, in 2001.
