Epsilon Yayınevi Lost Words Dictionary

Product description

In 1901, the legendary oxford english dictionary, compiled by editor dr. james murray and other lexicographers, was found to be missing the word “concubine”. This book is the story of the girl who stole it... esme is born into a world made of words. He spends his childhood in scriptorium, a garden shed in oxford where his father and a team of dedicated lexicographers collect words. Esme's place is under the sorting table, it's not seen and not heard. As esme grows, she notices that words related to the experiences of women and ordinary people, especially, aren't being recorded. So he starts looking for words for his own dictionary: the dictionary of missing words. For this, he must leave the sheltered world of academia and venture out to meet people who will fill the pages of his own lexicon. At the height of the women's suffrage movement and as the great war loomed, the lost words dictionary uncovers a lost narrative, hidden between the lines of history written by men. Inspired by real events, australian author pip williams delved into the oxford english dictionary archives to craft this highly original story, blending the intimate details of the era with a contemporary perspective and rich character development. The lost words dictionary is a delightful, poetic, and satisfying blend of the real and the historical, born from words and their capacity to define the world, and most importantly, to challenge it.
