My mother divided the children into three categories: angels, devils, and donkeys. She assigned the gentle and obedient boys and girls to the angels. instead, they sucked their fingers, imagining it was delicious soup, and grew plump and beautiful. Some of the little rascals belonged to the devils. One of them, my mother said, roamed the apartment from morning till night, laughing maliciously, knocking down everything in his path, damaging furniture, overturning china vases, and tearing wallpaper. They demanded food, screaming and biting disgustingly. The donkeys, however, were quite different. A donkey entered the body of the child belonging to this category from birth. The donkey confidently occupies its place, making the child a burden to those around it. This child was not an angel, like the children of the first generation, though his features may have been beautiful, and he neither became angry nor threatened, as the remnants of demons do. He was distinguished by three formidable traits: stubbornness, as this child always and forever insisted on his own opinion

fairness, as he nitpicked even the smallest mistakes

and courage, as no restraint could deter his wicked pursuit of knowledge. The author won the Ernest Hemingway Award for Literature in Canada in 2017 for this book, and it was longlisted for the Yasnaya Polana Prize in 2017.
