Product description
Palestinian poet Ahmed Al-Akhras presents his first collection, "A Hungry Bird," a title by which he became known to his audience on Twitter. From the very first page, the atmosphere of the collection is immediately evoked: a deserted lighthouse, a desolate shore, and no light. The poet then embraces us without offering his hand, revealing his identity as a guardian of an orphaned bird, possessing a unique vision of life and love. As you journey through his work, you will be captivated by the opening lines and closing lines of the poems, his deliberate repetitions, his distinctive vocabulary, his unique derivations, his astonishing fluidity, and the unique innovations that enrich the collection, particularly in terms of imagery and the captured idea. Furthermore, his delicate emotional experience, penned with the heart of a bird, is dedicated to the woman whose femininity he explores, awakening her from her deep slumber and crowning her undisputed king of his poems. You will ask yourself in wonder, as I did myself: How did this poet manage to establish his lofty poetic beacon from his very first collection, which is a fully mature and stylistically accomplished artistic experience? You will conclude that he nurtured poetry within his soul and feelings, writing it internally until its clusters ripened, then he pressed them and offered them as a palatable drink to those who would drink them. He has been writing poetry for a long time, ever since it became intertwined with his feelings and blood, so that poetry began to write him. You will be certain that the beacon that greeted you at the beginning is none other than his own, whose foundations he laid at the crossroads of poetry. The collection, comprising approximately 130 pages, falls into two main branches: classical Arabic poetry and free verse. Although Al-Asfour published his prose poems on his Twitter account—poems that bear his distinctive mark, just like their counterparts in classical Arabic poetry—this collection is devoid of them, perhaps because he intended to dedicate a separate volume to them. The bird does not forget its music, for it is the maestro of the complete sea and its authorized agent, and a loyal friend to the repetitive rhyme of the letter "ra" and the silent rhymes crowded with the resonant rhythm and the loud bell that dispels its sadness. The collection is filled with pristine meanings that create endless circles in the lake of wonder, and make us futilely turn over our memory and poetic store to find its equal, but we do not find it. I even claim that this bird will be among the authors of verses that travel like proverbs, remaining in the ear of time and the memory of the recipient.
