aphorism evades definition: it may appear as a random doodle or a more flamboyant observation. Whether it's an arbitrary piece or a crystalline piece, an aphorism captures the beginning of an idea. Franz kafka wrote aphorisms in two periods of his life. He wrote a series of 109, between september 1917 and april 1918, in the city of zurau in bohemia, visiting his kafka sister ottla, and during times when he did not rest for a short time after being diagnosed with tuberculosis, which would eventually cost him his life. First in 1931, seven years after his death, they were published by his friend and literary executant max brod under the title “thoughts on sin, hope, grief and the true path”. The second series of aphorisms, no. 41, was first published in kafka's diary between january 6 and february 29, 1920. they were also published after his death under the name “er”.
