Product description

On april 1914, mehmet remzi bey stood on the deck of the ship carrying him, the umut burnu, smiling at the salty coolness of the wind licking his face as it turned. He was still in the spring of his life

with a newly sewn uniform on his shoulder, longing for istanbul inside, with his young wife who was pregnant with his first child by his side... he would plant the flag of the ottomans in the farthest lands represented for the first time.

but the great war engulfed everything in a night.

the consulate's gate was shot, his belongings were thrown onto the street, his family was abandoned in a johannesburg night of darkness.

his salary was not paid.

help did not come.

two winters have passed. He waited. The child was born while he was in that prison, the youth on his wife's face faded. Mr. mehmet remzi achieved his right on february 14, 1916.

forty-six years proudly kept his head, bowing it in a muslim cemetery in foreign soil. The stone placed on top had one side in ottoman, the other in english

like the final cry of a soul trapped between two worlds. Mr. mehmet remzi is not dead. He is still at his post in the african wilderness, in the mosques, in the colorful bo-kaap houses, at every holiday read in the mevlit, in every ottoman passport story. Because he is not the last but the eternal consul of turks in africa. This book tells about his adventure.
