Summary: in england, david constantine, best known for his poems and translations of classic german poets like goethe and hölderlin, is introducing his first collection of stories, *in another country*. The book received rave reviews from prominent authors such as a. s. byatt and a. l. kennedy, and was named one of the best books of the year by the independent and guardian newspapers in 2005, the year it was published.

The stories of constantine sometimes freeze and frame the lives of people at the moment when the past rises to the surface, and sometimes at the point where the present can't bear its own weight and collapses: a young woman who was buried with a step she took in vain, emerging fifty years later from the ice and melting the body of her lover with tears, who left behind a life.

or the businessman who realizes that his soul has left his body behind, right in the middle of a speech at a crowded conference. Constantine depicts the inner world of his characters, who cannot even take a minute away from their hell, with true mastery, placing them in unique places in ireland, athens, or paris.
