The Non-Linear History
Manual of landa / metis publishing
Mexican writer, artist, philosopher, and science writer manuel de landa is one of today's most compelling and innovative thinkers. "a thousand years of non-linear history" is a bold project: to interweave a crucial segment of human history with the history of energy flows, rocks, and microorganisms. in pursuing this project, the author draws upon modern natural sciences, including non-linear dynamics, self-organization theories, artificial life and artificial intelligence, chaos theory, deleuzean philosophy, and braudelian historiography. through these endeavors, he has become a leading figure in the conception of a "new materialism."
This materialist history reads the history of the physical, biological, and social/cultural worlds through the history of solidification, acceleration, and deceleration processes to which the flows of matter-energy are subjected. therefore, it treats the history of humanity as a complex process that is affected in different ways by the material world in which it is embedded, but also affects this material world in very different ways: this is a history that does not follow a linear, erect "progress."
He structures his book into three sections: geological history, biological history, and linguistic history. in all three, he demonstrates that similar processes are at play, processes that are often misunderstood due to the rigid, dogmatic, and functionalist approaches prevalent in each field. he also passionately critiques the increasingly common "cultural relativism" approach, which attempts to understand people solely through culture or language.
