Zıpçıkıktılar is the story of a womanizing young man living in Fatih who pursues a young girl who does not want to marry through an arranged marriage, and thanks to this very lively marriage, which is later marred by murder and forbidden love, he moves to an apartment in Şişli and moves up in class

The first part of the novel tells about the young man's efforts to make the marriage come true and his forbidden love, while the second part tells about the apartment life in Şişli

Peyami Safa reacts with a nationalist and conservative reflex against the unconditional surrender of culture to Western influence under the name of modernization, both in the first part of the novel, where Fatih is the subject, and in the second part of the novel, where the "crooked" relationships in Şişli are dealt with, and evaluates this influence spreading to traditional neighborhoods as a dangerous crack that will cause the collapse of the whole culture

However, the novel, which treats East and West as two different poles, does not polarize men and women to the same extent

it draws a fluid gender portrait with scenes in which women take the lead where chivalry is required, women use physical violence against men to get their way, men struggle with their emotions and are incapacitated, one side turns into the other and this cycle is repeated in different ways, and it concludes the tragic ending of the novel by turning it into a moral lesson for the "Turkish man"

This is a lesson given not by a man who is led astray by a "bad woman" and suffers and regrets it, as we are accustomed to in Turkish literature, but by the one who leads him astray, the "immoral one"
