although it is known as an old bulgarian tradition, marteniçka is a spring ritual celebrated every year due to balkan emigrants, known throughout the balkan geography and even in turkey.

in march, when the first stork of the year is seen, it is removed from the wrists and tied to a fruit-bearing tree. If a stork is seen in march, it is believed that the wishes made while wearing a martencika will come true.
