Product description

“it's snowy and fun, and like everything from john banville's hand, it's deep and beautiful.” "the financial times man booker award-winning irish writer john banville had announced that he had officially killed benjamin black, who is considered the alter ego in the detective novels he has been writing for years."

after this decision, the first murder novel he published, snow, is also a death warrant for a beloved imaginary writer. Detective strafford, the protagonist of the secret guests, a previous novel by the author, reappears to investigate a murder committed towards the end of 1957 in wexford, ireland. In the library of the ballyglass manor, belonging to the osborne family full of unknowns, the body of a brutally killed priest is found.

the taciturn widower colonel osborne, his mentally unstable, delusional second wife and his daughter who hates stepmothers are the primary suspects.

detective strafford tries to get to the killer from the impulse behind the murder, leaving himself in the middle of a social welfare line. John banville, in wexford where he was born and grew up, touches many sensitive points, especially the catholic-protestant conflict in ireland, with a murder investigation taking place during a period when his youth years were passing.
