عود الهواء (Oud al-Hawa) is a term used in various Arab cultures, primarily referring to one of two things: a traditional folk remedy or a specific plant used in herbal medicine. Here is a breakdown of what it usually refers to: 1. The "Wind Remedy" (Folk Medicine) In traditional Khaleeji and Levantine medicine, it is often a mixture of herbs used to treat what is locally called "Hawa" (literally "air" or "wind"). The Ailment: It’s believed that "trapped air" in the ears, head, or joints causes headaches, dizziness, or localized pain. The Treatment: "Oud al-Hawa" is burned like incense (Bakhoor), and the patient inhales the smoke or exposes the painful area to it. It usually contains a mix of herbs like myrrh, harmal (peganum harmala), and various wood resins. 2. The Plant: Alkanna Tinctoria (Alkanet) In many herbalist shops (Attar), "Oud al-Hawa" is the common name for the Alkanet root. Appearance: A dark, reddish-purple root. Uses: * Skin Care: Known for its cooling properties, it's often infused in oil to treat burns, wounds, and eczema. Natural Dye: It releases a deep red/purple pigment used for coloring oils, soaps, and even food. Respiratory Issues: Sometimes boiled as a tea to help with persistent coughs or "chest wind."
