Doğu Batı Yayınları Gitanjali

Product description

In 1912, rabindranath tagore, upon receiving an invitation from his painter friend william rothenstein to travel to great britain, took the opportunity of the long sea voyage to attempt translations of his own poems into english for the first time. The story of a bengali poet, who on one hand became the greatest poet of modern india, and on the other hand, a hindi-english poet, thus begins his place among the leading names of world literature. The poems first reach william butler yeats and ezra pound in britain, and then through them, the english literary circles. In the preface he wrote for the first edition of gitanjali in 1912, yeats mentions tagore saying, "his poems reflect a world i have dreamed of throughout my life with the thoughts they contain," while pound compares him to dante. Before the end of a year, tagore is deemed worthy of the nobel prize in literature. In the following years, tagore's poems are translated into various languages by important european, russian and latin american literary figures, reaching a wide audience worldwide. We present to our readers the legendary book gitanjali, which paved the way for tagore to have a prominent place in world literature, with its new edition meticulously prepared by translator aytek sever, along with the wonderful foreword of w. b. yeats.
